I’ve been scrolling through abaya inspiration all week, and honestly? I’m obsessed with how Middle Eastern women express style through Abayas. And the styles this season are too good not to share. I ran a poll with some of our MIEF readers and here are the 7 abaya styles that truly stood out for us.
The Classic Black Abaya
Black has always been the colour of mystery and elegance. Why? Because it’s the one Abaya you can style with literally anything: a brooch, heels, a turban, a clutch, even all at once, and it still won’t feel too much.
When you can’t decide what to wear, this is the piece you reach for. Clean, timeless, and always appropriate.
Embroidered Abaya
Designers here in the Middle East treat embroidery like art, often inspired by cultural motifs. From hand-stitched floral cuffs, to beading and traditional cross-stitch patterns, embroidery can transform the most basic abaya into a statement piece that looks one-of-a-kind.
If you want to go all out for an event without trying too hard, an embroidered abaya is the answer.
Two-Piece Abaya
You can never go wrong with a pastel, dark coloured or flowery two piece Abaya. It usually comes with a matching inner dress or slip, so you instantly have a complete outfit. No more staring at your closet asking, “What do I wear under this?”
And the best part? Each piece works separately too.
- The slip dress can be worn on its own.
- The outer abaya can be styled with jeans, leggings, corporate trousers, long fitted or mini skirts, or dresses.
A very popular version is the open Abaya set paired with a full-sleeve slip dress. Pack them on a trip, so you can get a back up look.
Kimono Abaya
When you want something airy, relaxed, and different from your usual cuts, go for a kimono abaya.
It is flowy, effortless, and easy to style:
- Wear it with jeans or leggings for a casual look.
- Style it with a dress for something more formal.
Even with its wide sleeves, the relaxed bodice gives you different styling options.
Exclusive/Premium Abaya
Let’s be honest: you deserve a premium, high end, exclusive abaya.
An affordable or super expensive (depends on your budget) custom-made piece by a skilled designer can be stunning. Luxury abayas usually start with premium fabrics like velvet, silk or high quality crepe in jaw dropping designs.
So, when you have an event where you need to go bold, elegant, and unforgettable, this is the Abaya you should be reaching for.
Frock Abaya
It is loose, flare, flowing but retains its class. The frock abaya gives you a soft, feminine silhouette while keeping the modesty intact. You can get them with layers, pleats, paneling, or subtle peplum details depending on your style.
It mixes tradition with modern flair and is perfect for dates, garden parties, or any moment you want to look graceful without trying too hard.
Layered Abaya
Layering literally brings drama, irrespective of symmetry or asymmetry. And you could mix up different fabrics to come up with that distinct style. Think different fabrics layered together. Soft chiffon panels, tiered velvet, or draping that flows beautifully as you walk. The layered effect gives you that “royalty” vibe but with modern modesty.
For your layered abaya, you could add heels and a clutch for a date.
You really don’t need a truckload of abayas to look gorgeous. You just need the right ones.
